History of KMC University

Kathy Mills Chang and KMC University

Perhaps as with most businesses with dynamic and visionary CEOs, the history of Kathy Mills Chang, Inc., and its training and implementation arm, KMC University, is in many ways the history of Kathy herself. All of us here, whether we are chiropractors, Certified Medical Compliance Specialists (MCS-Ps), coaches, or support staff, found our first encounters with chiropractic to be profound and life-changing. Having seen our health and the fabric of our lives so positively impacted by the principles and practice of chiropractic, we all share the same goal: to give back to the profession that has given us so much, and to keep chiropractic at the center of healthcare conversations and awareness.

From Insurance CA to CEO

For Kathy Mills Chang, who had long suffered from asthma, that first encounter was in 1983, when she became an insurance CA—and a chiropractic patient. Her health and her life path were both transformed. Between 1983 and 2007, Kathy built, managed, and coached many high-volume chiropractic and multidisciplinary practices throughout the country, and served as the American Chiropractic Association’s primary staff contact for coding, insurance, Medicare, and other practice management issues.

When Kathy founded Kathy Mills Chang, Inc., in 2007, she was already an international lecturer, author, columnist, seminar leader and trainer. It is her vision that leads our team to stretch a little further every day to make sure every single one of our clients and customers reaches new heights in practice profitability and safety. We help doctors make and keep more money by streamlining effective and predictable financial systems, solving coding and documentation dilemmas, creating effective patient financial systems, and providing support on the latest in Medicare, compliance, and reimbursement.

Kathy Mills Chang, Inc., is our parent company, working in partnership with industry leaders, trusted affiliates through our Alliance Partner Consulting Contracts, and with state and national associations and chiropractic colleges to serve the profession.

KMC University

KMC University is where we consult, coach, train and teach on chiropractic reimbursement and compliance topics like Medicare, documentation, billing, collections, coding, and HIPAA. KMC University offers reimbursement and compliance solutions both a la carte in a variety of packages, and via customized coaching and accountability without long-term commitments. Although we are well-versed in chiropractic, our unique combination of team members and their diversity of experience in the profession gives us a 25,000-foot view of your practice with a necessary objectivity that’s difficult for DCs in the trenches to perceive. Whether multi-disciplinary or straight chiropractic, we’ve been there and done that.

The Big Picture

We know that DCs are passionate about the treatment, the need for the patients to receive the treatment, and the need to be reimbursed for that treatment. Sometimes those passions conflict with each other, and the ensuing frustration doesn’t leave room for a big-picture viewpoint. We’ve worked with the ACA, we’ve worked with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Medicare issues, and we are chiropractors who became consultants. As such we’re several levels removed from the actual patient experience, which allows us to trust the systems and the policy or law. There is often more than one way to solve a problem and, with this knowledge, it allows us to look for the twists and turns in the rules that will best serve a client. Likewise, by understanding what you can’t do, it opens up a world of possibility for what you can do. That gives us a unique perspective to advise clients on ways to keep a robust reimbursement department, while staying safely on the right side of the law.

I am writing in regards to the KMC Compliance program my office signed up for. At first, I thought it would just be a program to look at our office and make sure we were doing things correctly, but as the meetings went on I realized the KMC program provided a ton of information at my fingertips. I have worked in chiropractic offices for 12 years (and currently work in two), and this is the first time I finally felt like I was receiving the answers to 'grey area' questions I've had for quite some time. I absolutely love the training videos, and the one on one meetings with you were greatly appreciated. We got knowledgeable and personalized answers based on our practices needs. I highly recommend this program to any practice considering it, having doctors and staff trained in this is an absolute necessity if that practice is accepting insurances. Thank you for all your help with making sure our office is compliant and has the knowledge to continue dealing with all the rules and regulations of very confusing insurance policies.
