KMC University on Compliance

Alphabet soup

There was a time when DCs could stay informed simply by comparing notes and attending a few seminars, but those days are long past. Over the years, a veritable alphabet soup of state and federal government agencies have implemented thousands of rules and regulations for healthcare providers, and these agencies are quite happy to throw hefty fines and penalties at you if you misstep. Add to that the stranglehold that other commercial carriers have on third-party reimbursement dollars, and it’s clear that ignorance will not hold up as a defense. Chiropractic compliance isn’t just a strong suggestion; it’s mandatory and it’s the law.

Compliance resources

There are many websites, publications, and other information sources out there to help you stay up to date on healthcare compliance. If you’re a doctor or a compliance officer, it’s well worth taking advantage of every opportunity you can to get and stay up to speed.

Among these sources are your State and National Associations, third-party payers (including Medicare), and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) website itself. The OIG provides comprehensive information on healthcare compliance as well as the most up-to-date Advisory Opinions, Fraud Alerts, Bulletins, and other new issues in chiropractic compliance as they arise.

Compliance pays off

The good news is that compliance actually does help you make and keep more money. For example, we find that doctors who have compliant self-audit systems in place actually find missed reimbursement opportunities by catching services that were performed and not billed. In addition, (EOB) audits of routine coding and insurance explanation of benefits can catch patterns and errors that are probably costing you money. The best news is that a willingness to put policies and procedures in place to ensure compliance with healthcare programs makes you look good. You are not the ones they are looking for.
