Often, Medicare is considered the worst payer in a practice’s fee system. However, because of the declining reimbursement with other third-party commercial payers, Medicare patients’ Collected Visit Average (CVA) may be near the top of the list. The reason is that while Medicare may only pay for the covered Chiropractic Manipulative Treatment (CMT) codes, all other services you render are essentially for a “cash” patient. For those practices that long for more cash and less insurance, Medicare patients are a welcome option when managed correctly. This training concept will outline the opportunities and potential pitfalls of managing Medicare collections.

  • Recognize the Federal guidelines that regulate how you collect from Medicare patients
  • Implement proper collections techniques for both covered and non-covered services under Medicare
  • Consider whether certain types of payment plans make sense for the practice
  • Decide whether membership in a Discount Medical Plan Organization (DMPO) is a good option for your patients that are uninsured, under-insured, or partially insured (e.g., Medicare patients)
